I can’t draw hands!
It’s like, I’m almost there. I can draw a hand as a concept… you know what I mean? Like a mitt on the end of an arm where the hand should go. And I can draw a hand realistically from life or a photo as it’s own individual thing. But sticking a stylized, cartoony hand onto one of my stylized, cartoony drawings is something I have had to avoid. Because I simply cannot.
And to be honest, I was quite happy avoiding hands. Who needs fingers anyway? That could become my signature thing! Drawings of people with their fingers fused together.
But then I saw these rings!
These gorgeous, haunting rings by the artist Vernon Bowden. And they sparked some inspiration in my that I really couldn’t shake. I had a vision in my head of what I wanted to paint and I wasn’t sure if I’d be able to pull it off.
I spent hours looking at hand references and eventually came up with Handy. I reckon after a bit more practice, I won’t have to doom everyone I draw to a life without fingers afterall.
The problem is; working from home doesn’t really feel like work. Just imagine the disapproving raised eyebrow you’d get from Susan in HR
